The Boyne Valley
More than any other river
in the country, this meandering body of water
has been at the center
of Irish history. The banks of the Boyne hold reminders
of almost every phase of Ireland's past, from the
prehistoric passage tombs of Newgrange to the storied
Hill of Tara, seat of the High Kings, to early
Christian sites. This land was also the setting
for the infamous Battle of the Boyne, when on July
1, 1690 (July 12 on modern calendars), King William
III defeated the exiled King James II for the crown
of England.
